BEFORE & AFTER: KITCHEN MAKEOVER

There had been nothing really wrong with the kitchen that we bought with our apartment, it was just a bit tacky and poorly assembled. The main idea behind this renovation was to create a solid, uniform, almost monolithic base and leave the rest of the room uncluttered, bright and airy.

We made several strong decisions: for instance, we wanted to keep the same wooden floor throughout the apartment. This particular floor surface is pre-treated and adequate for kitchen uses. We decided to omit wall cupboards, which we believe are generally bulky and oppressive. The necessary storage space had been provided by the island base units, one of which accomodates the microwave.

We also omitted the extractor: from our experience, in few months extractors that are not properly connected to the outside tend to became rather useless. The kitchen has a large double french door and an extra window above the sink. 

We really didn't like any type of backsplash, so we painted the wall with a special washable paint that has worked very well so far. We also omitted to instal an upstand because it gave the whole worktop an ugly boxy look in our opinion. Finally, we wanted a warmer, lateral and soft light to switch on after cooking, as an alternative to the strong cold light that comes from the 6 ceiling spot lights.

The L1 has been in production since 1937, has deservedly been heralded as a classic and has been awarded many prizes for its timeless archetypal design. The Illinois Institute of Technology Fortune's list considered it one of the 100 best products ever made and it is part of the MoMA collection.
