BEFORE/AFTER - EDWARDIAN FIREPLACE

When we bought our apartment one of the first changes that we decided to make was to replace the existing fireplace surround with an original one.








Victorian and Edwardian fireplaces date from the mid 19th Century to the early 20th Century. Simple fireplaces from both the periods were completely cast iron. The Victorians preferred coal instead of wood (the coals were set into small baskets) while during the Edwardian time the Arts and Craft movement preferred the wood in freestanding dog baskets.

Edwardian era fireplaces are characterised by simple design and sparse detail while the Art Nouveau patterns were added during later Victorian and Edwardian period.




Here below you can find my explanatory sketch for the fitting of a new cast iron surround and granite hearth to an existing fireplace hole. The process is divided in 3 phases:
